Life of William Carey: The Father of Modern Missions

A Humble Beginning

William Carey (1761–1834), often called the “Father of Modern Missions,” began his journey as a humble English cobbler. Despite having limited formal education, he became one of history’s most influential Christian missionaries. His passion for God’s glory among the nations drove him to proclaim the gospel across the globe. Inspired by Christ’s Great Commission, Carey challenged the complacency of his contemporaries with the bold statement: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”

Reflections on Legacy

As my days of active work come to an end, I am hesitant to address the religious community once more. Yet, I feel a constant reminder urging me: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your strength; for there is no work, knowledge, or planning in the grave where you are going.” These words compel me to leave something behind—a small contribution to keep my memory alive, even if only for a short time.

The approach of life’s sunset quickens my thoughts, directing them toward those who will continue this work. Although my views may not gain universal agreement, I trust that time will reveal their value.

Encouragement for the Next Generation

An exciting and challenging field of ministry awaits young ministers today. There has never been a greater task than the one they are called to fulfill in this age. With a growing awareness of the work’s importance, I deeply hope they will surpass my efforts in their calling. It is with this hope in mind that I humbly share a few thoughts to inspire and guide my younger colleagues.
