Charles Bridges (1794–1869) was a respected English evangelical pastor, author, and theologian, best known for his deeply spiritual commentaries on Scripture. A leading voice among the 19th-century Evangelical clergy in the Church of England, Bridges served as vicar of Old Newton in Suffolk and later of Weymouth in Dorset. He was closely associated with the same revival-minded movement that included J. C. Ryle and Charles Simeon—men committed to sound doctrine, holiness of life, and faithful exposition of the Word of God. Bridges’ writings, particularly Exposition of Psalm 119, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, have long been prized for their devotional warmth, pastoral insight, and practical application of biblical truth. His work reflects both a tender love for Christ and a reverent fear of God, offering guidance to ministers and believers alike.
