Jeanette Gedalius (1864–1941) was a Jewish girl who came to faith in Christ at the age of fifteen, enduring years of hardship for her testimony. By nineteen, she had been cast out of her home for following “the hanged One.” Records show that two years after publishing her autobiography, Jeanette was serving in San Francisco as a worker among women and children with the San Francisco Hebrew Mission, founded in 1896 by Henry Chester. This ministry, though undenominational, enjoyed the trust and support of local churches and saw several Jews come to Christ. Jeanette’s work was cut short by the city’s great earthquake and fire, which destroyed the mission building at 939 Howard Street and much of its financial support.
