“You will be eaten by cannibals!” was the response one man replied to John Paton as he described his plans to go forth as a missionary the islands of the South Pacific. Paton replied, “Mr. Dickson, you are advanced in years now, and your own prospect is soon to be laid in the grave, there to be eaten by worms, I confess to you, that if I can but live and die serving and honoring the Lord Jesus, it will make no difference to me whether I am eaten by cannibals or by worms; and in the Great Day my resurrection body will arise as fair as yours in the likeness of our risen Redeemer.”

When it comes to John G. Paton biographies, the first that was published was, “John G. Paton Missionary to the New Hebrides”. After which James Paton, the brother of John, published a condensed version under the title, “The Story of John G. Paton; Or, Thirty Years Among South Sea Cannibals”. In 1923, A.K. Langridge modified that volume and republished it. The book in your hands is a combination of what James Paton and A.K. Langridge edited. The condensed parts are in the areas where Paton traveled to raise funds. Also at the end of Langridge’s volume, leading up to Paton’s death, he added several chapters, which are also included in this volume.

By John G. Paton

John Gibson Paton (24 May 1824 – 28 January 1907), born in Scotland, was a Protestant missionary to the New Hebrides Islands of the South Pacific. He brought the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those dark islands at great risk for his own life.
